The book is large measuring 9.2" x 13" so you can't miss it on the shelf, it really is a lovely book to have facing out with its minimalistic white cover with feathers floating down onto the nose of the large black cat. The inside covers are one of my favorite parts of the book with different feathers adorning both pages, the bright colors combined with linear detail don't disappoint. When you begin the book you start to notice the sneaky cat is on every page of the book in some capacity. It becomes a fun game for little ones to guess what part of the cat will show up on the next page with the new bird. Each page has a bird, the bird's name and the plumes/feathers from that bird, there is no other writing until the last two pages. The book does lack a story, so if you are expecting a plot you will be disappointed. This is the reason that I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. If you want to expose young readers to different birds then this is a nice introduction. The birds covered in the book are: Goose, Peacock, Seagull, Ibis, Nuthatch, Guinea Fowl, Owl, Stork, Eagle, Blackbird, King Fisher, Jay, Porrotfinch, Pigeon, Turkey, Swallow, Chicken, and Duck.
This book is simplistic but quite impressive! The inside covers (both front and back) are loaded with images of feathers including the type of bird. It's a very quick read but a reference type book for younger students. Very fun. Very beautiful. The book is quite impressive in size as well. This homeschooling family is in love!!
I don’t have kids but I love black cats. And I love birds. This book was even more wonderful than I expected. The story is beautiful and if you look closely at the illustrations you’ll get some surprises. I’m also a graphic designer and the illustration work is frame-worthy. If I need a gift for a kid, this is on my list.
To say that this book is lacking a plot is an understatement. There is exactly one word on each page - the name of the bird. Granted the drawings of the feathers are exceptional, but this is not a book for beginning readers as there is virtually nothing to read. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement. If it weren't such a hassle, I would return the book. Clearly my 6 year old grandson will done with it in minutes. There is absolutely no plot, no story, no explanation about where each feather is on the bird, nothing. I rarely review items that I have purchased but I am not at all satisfied with this purchase.
Beautiful illustrations! Our 2 3/4 years grandson loves looking at this and learning the names of birds. He also loves finding Plume in the illustrations. Great book!
